Most Carson Valley painting questions come down to four things: what drives the price, how long the work takes, who moves the furniture, and what goes on the walls. Price here depends on square footage, surface condition, preparation, number of colors, access and product choice, so every project is quoted on site.
What affects the price of a painting job in the Carson Valley?
Six things move the number more than anything else: square footage, the condition of the surfaces, how much preparation is needed, how many colors you want, how hard the work is to reach, and which products you choose. Two houses on the same street in Gardnerville can price very differently if one has patched drywall and three accent colors and the other is a straight repaint in one color.
We give estimates by phone or through the quote form, but the real number comes from looking at the surfaces. That's why every project is quoted on site. A ceiling with old water staining, trim that was never sanded properly, or siding with chalking all add hours that nobody can see over the phone.
Right now we're running 25% off interior painting for a limited time. If you're weighing a few rooms against a whole-house repaint, it's worth asking about both while that's on — call (775) 450-5012 or use the quote form.
You can see how the pieces break down on our interior painting page.
How long does an interior repaint take?
The schedule is driven by preparation and coats, not by the painting itself. Masking, filling, sanding and priming typically take as long as rolling the walls. A few rooms is usually a short job; a full interior with ceilings, trim and doors runs considerably longer because trim and doors are slow, detailed work.
Drying conditions matter too. The Carson Valley is dry most of the year, which generally helps, but a cold room in January or a closed-up house with no airflow will stretch recoat times. We'd rather give a coat the time it needs than rush a second coat onto a surface that isn't ready.
We work by appointment, Monday through Saturday, and you'll hear about schedule changes from the owner directly rather than from a dispatcher.
When is the right time to paint an exterior here?
Minden sits at roughly 4,731 feet, and the weather swings accordingly — summers hot, arid and mostly clear, winters cold and snowy, with temperatures ranging on average from about 23°F to 89°F over the year, according to https://weatherspark.com/y/1533/Average-Weather-in-Minden-Nevada-United-States-Year-Round.
Temperature, wind and moisture all affect how coatings go on and how they cure. Too cold and the film doesn't form properly; too hot and direct sun on a south wall can flash the paint off before it levels. Wind pushes dust onto a wet surface, which is a real issue on open lots around Gardnerville and Smith Valley.
We walk through the booking window in more detail in our post on the exterior painting season in the Carson Valley.
What do I need to do before the crew arrives?
Plan on clearing the small stuff: wall art, mirrors, curtains, breakables, and anything personal you'd rather handle yourself. Pull items out of closets if the closets are being painted. We handle moving and covering larger furniture, floor protection and masking.
Preparation is where a paint job is won or lost. Cleaning, scraping, sanding, filling and priming are what decide whether the finish still looks right in year five. A good product over a poorly prepared surface fails early, and no amount of topcoat hides it.
Our post on preparing your home for interior painters covers the room-by-room version.
Who supplies the paint, and how do I know what's going on my walls?
We supply the paint and materials as part of the job. The specific products, sheens and colors are written into your estimate before work starts, so there's no guessing about what was used if you need to touch up a wall in two years.
If you have a preference for a particular brand or line, say so during the walkthrough. If you want a different sheen on the trim than on the walls, that's a conversation worth having up front, because changing it later means repainting.
Not sure what sheen belongs where? Our guide to paint sheen for walls, ceilings and trim is the short version of the answer we give on site.
What about older homes and lead paint?
If your home was built before 1978, lead-based paint is a real possibility, and there are plenty of pre-1978 houses around Carson City, Genoa, Virginia City and Dayton. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires firms doing work that disturbs lead-based paint in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities to be certified and to follow lead-safe work practices. The details are at https://www.epa.gov/lead/renovation-repair-and-painting-program-contractors.
If your home is that old, ask any contractor directly about their certification status under that rule and how they plan to contain and clean up dust. It's a fair question and you should get a straight answer.
Confirm requirements that apply to your specific property with the EPA and your local building department before work begins.
How do I check that a painter is properly licensed in Nevada?
Painting in Nevada falls under the State Contractors Board's C-4 Painting and Decorating classification, which covers applying paint, varnish, stain and protective coatings (see https://www.examprep.org/contractors-license/seminars/nevada/nevada-painting-and-decorating-contractor-c-4/).
Ask for the license number, then verify it yourself rather than taking a logo on a truck at face value. We walk through the lookup step by step in our post on how to check a Nevada painting contractor's license, along with the questions worth asking about insurance.
J&R Painting has been family-owned since 1989 and is based in Minden. Randy Moore runs the jobs and answers the phone, from the estimate through the final walkthrough. We serve Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Smith Valley, Coleville, Reno and Silver Springs, and we handle interiors, exteriors, cabinets, walls and ceilings, trim and doors, decks and fences, and small commercial work.
Frequently asked questions
Do you give free estimates over the phone?
We'll talk through scope and give you a sense of range by phone or through the quote form, but the written estimate comes after we look at the surfaces. Call (775) 450-5012 or email randyraymoore@gmail.com to set up a time.
Can I stay in the house while you paint the interior?
Most homeowners do. We work room by room where possible so you keep usable space, and we talk through which areas will be off limits each day before we start.
Do you paint cabinets, or only walls?
We paint kitchen cabinets as well as walls, ceilings, trim, doors, decks and fences. Cabinet work is its own process — cleaning, preparation, doors and drawer fronts, then durable finish coats.
How far out are you booking?
It varies by season, with exteriors tightening up in the warmer months. We work by appointment Monday through Saturday, so call early if you have a date in mind.
Do you do small commercial work?
Yes. We handle small commercial painting in Carson City and the Carson Valley alongside residential jobs. Tell us the square footage and your access hours when you call.
